Until recently, in the Ukraine, like in all post-Soviet territory, cobalt guns were used for radiation therapy almost in every clinic. Cobalt radiation has limited penetration ability, the beam is diffused and healthy tissues on the way to the tumor receive rather large dozes of radiation.

The beaming tempo is low, which makes treatment sessions rather long and, thus, the treatment is less focused. The above said results in lower treatment effect, coupled with explicit side effects and complications caused by radiation therapy.

Use of linear accelerators complemented with three-dimensional planning, computer tomography and sophisticated software in Lissod allows seeing three-dimensional image of tumor and healthy organs. The required doze of radiation is applied to the tumor, while the adjacent tissues and organs remain practically unaffected. Frequency of side effects and radiation therapy inherent complications, in their turn, are close to null. It should be noted that the above requires not only linear accelerators, but also a team of top class professionals in radiation therapy, technicians, medical physicists and electronic engineers, who attended training and were on secondment abroad.

One of the major advantages provided by using advanced technologies in Lissod is the ability to avoid risks of human errors and equipment malfunctions, which is ensured by way of direct monitoring the radiation field coupled with communication and computerized electronic control systems. Electron irradiation in Lissod linear accelerators unit ensures focused treatment of surface tumors without affecting internal organs. Additional advantage is the capability of intraoperative exposure. Since Lissod surgical department is functionally connected with linear accelerators unit, where the facilities comply with advanced standards on operative theatres in terms of air flow purity and equipment, the patient under general anesthesia is transferred to linear accelerator facility, thus, resulting in focused exposure of the removed tumor bed to sufficient radiation doze. No damage is caused to the adjacent tissue, while the chances for recovery increase substantially. This system is employed when treating breast and pancreatic gland cancer, soft tissue and pelvic (rectum, cervix) sarcoma, etc. For instance, in case of breast cancer, the patient can avoid visiting the hospital every day for 5-7 weeks for radiation treatment, and the treatment can be completed with a one-time radiation exposure performed during the surgery. This method puts Lissod in the same line with prestigious institutions, employing such technologies, that are not many in Europe.

For the first time in the Ukraine, Lissod employs brachytherapy on the basis of high capacity sources, namely, iridium. Under this technology, the source is embedded into the tumor by way of remote control without human hands touching it, which ensures ultimate radiation safety for both the patient, and the medical personnel. Brachytherapy, coupled with computer planning, ensures very high recovery rate with minimum side effect ratio in comparison with other obsolete technologies. Use of brachytherapy allows effective and swift treatment for cervix, breast, head and neck cancer, soft tissue sarcoma without the need for hospitalization or quarterectomy. Lissod specially equipped wards with air sterility level suitable for operative theatre, allow, in necessary cases, prescription of high-dosage chemotherapy.
