Distant therapy is a kind of radiotherapy, when radiation source, which is used for treatment, is located outside the patient’s body and the object of radiation is located in some distance from the source of radiation.

LISSOD is the only hospital in Ukraine, where linear accelerators of the last generation with 3D planning system produced by Varian, a world leader in this field, are used during radiation treatment execution.

Application of such equipment in combination with international standards of radiation therapy and professional skills of Western oncologists put Ukraine on one rank with the most developed countries of Europe and America.

Cobalt apparatus are used for radiation therapy almost everywhere till present in Ukraine. Cobalt radiation has limited penetration power, the beam is blurred and the healthy tissues get rather high doses on a way to tumor. Meanwhile the radiation rate is slow, therefore the duration of the therapeutic session is rather long and the treatment is less precise. All above mentioned facts decrease effectiveness of cancer treatment and leads to frank side effects and radiation therapy complications.

Application of linear accelerators in combination with 3D planning, computer tomography and complicated software involvement provides an option to receive 3D tumor and healthy organs image. Thus, the necessary dose of radiation is given to tumor and at the same time radiation does not extend to surrounding organs and tissues. In its turn, frequency of side effects and complications of radiation therapy tents to zero. In order to provide all the mentioned above options not only linear accelerators are needed, but specially trained stuff. The team of highly qualified radiation therapeutics, technicians, medical physics and electronic engineers, who have undergone training and studying abroad, works at LISSOD. In combination with highly qualified specialists, clinical oncologists, it gives us opportunity to ensure maximally effective result of cancer treatment.

One of the important advantages of modern technologies, applied in LISSOD hospital in cancer treatment, is avoidance of human errors probability and technical defects in equipment, which is achieved by direct observation over the radiation field in combination with communication systems and computerized electronic control. Electron radiation in Linear Accelerator Department ensures precise treatment of superficial tumors without damaging deeply located organs.
