Brachytherapy is a type of radiotherapy, where the source of radiation, located inside the patient’s body, is introduced into the cavities, directly in the tissues or put in contact on the body surface. The sense of the method lies in possibility of directing maximal doses of radiation therapy directly to the tumor nidus or into the necessary zone minimizing the effect on critical organs or adjoining tissues.

Brachytherapy allows carrying out several types of treatment, including:

  • intracavitary cancer treatment;
  • intrastitial cancer treatment.

Advantages of brachytherapy:

  • An opportunity to direct high local dose exacrly to the irradiated area, i.e. to direct the maximal dose to the tumor itself, which essentially improves effectiveness of treatment. The source is introduced into the tumor by distant control. Introduction of the source is executed under control of application software with the help of distant control;
  • It ensures high percent of recovery with minimal number of side effects.

In LISSOD brachytherapy is applied with usage of high-capacity sources, in particular, iridium. The source is introduced into the tumor by distant control without human hand touch, with full radiation safety for the patient and the staff. Brachytherapy together with computer planning ensures rather high rate of recovery with minimal number of side effects, in comparison with outdated technologies.

Brachytherapy is an effective method of cancer treatment that is used in combination with other methods in treatment of cervical cancer, esophageal cancer and other tumors.
